Storm-Caused Sinkhole Repair and Backyard Expansion in Williamsburg

One heavy rain event - around 5 to 6 inches - was all it took. The ground gave way, a 3-foot sinkhole opened up, and it swallowed part of the fence right along with it. That's the kind of damage that doesn't fix itself. The customer needed someone who could handle more than a patch job, and that's exactly what we came in to do.

We started by pulling the fencing and clearing the area. There was overgrowth and trees that had to come down before we could even get into the real work. Once that was hauled out, we got a clear picture of what we were dealing with - a compromised zone that needed to be rebuilt from the ground up, not just filled in and hoped for the best. That's a critical distinction. Loose fill will settle and fail again. Structural fill placed in compacted lifts with a vibratory roller is a completely different animal. We brought in 210 tons of structural fill material and built it back the right way.

With the fill work done, we turned to the drainage side. Water caused this problem, so controlling where water flows going forward was non-negotiable. We imported 40 tons of rip rap and set it to establish the channel and protect the repaired area from future erosion. Rip rap handles high-velocity flow without washing away - it's one of the most reliable tools for situations like this.

Once the grading and drainage were dialed in, we finished the property the right way. The front yard got sod where we had disturbed it during access. The expanded backyard area was seeded and strawed to get grass established. The end result wasn't just a repaired yard - the customer actually ended up with more usable backyard than they had when they first bought the home. Land that was previously inaccessible and written off is now open, graded, and functional.
