This homeowner had just purchased a brand new build in St Stephens Church, VA - only to quickly discover that the driveway was already failing. The grading along the front yard wasn't done right, and there was nowhere for sheet flow to go. Every rain event was pushing water straight across the driveway surface and washing out the base underneath. Not a great situation for a home you just moved into.
Here's what we were working with - a driveway that looked fine on the surface but had no real drainage solution built in. We knew we couldn't just throw material on top and call it a day. The fix had to address why the water was collecting and moving the way it was in the first place. That meant starting with a swale and an under-driveway culvert to actually redirect the sheet flow away from the problem area.
Once the drainage work was in place, we brought in RAP - recycled asphalt product - along with underlayment fabric. The fabric goes down first to stabilize the base and keep the material from shifting over time. Then the RAP gets laid and compacted down tight. You can see the roller in action during the compaction process - that step is what gives the surface its durability. Skip it or rush it, and the driveway won't hold up.
The end result is a driveway that actually sheds water the way it's supposed to. The swale channels runoff away from the surface, the culvert handles what goes underneath, and the compacted RAP gives the homeowner a solid, long-lasting driveway to use every day. No more washout. No more guessing where the water is going to go next rain.
This kind of work comes up more than you'd think on new construction sites in the King and Queen County area. Builders don't always get the grading right, and homeowners are left dealing with drainage problems on a property they just bought. Getting it corrected the right way - with proper drainage infrastructure and quality materials - makes all the difference in how long that driveway performs.
