This one was not for the faint of heart. A homeowner in Lanexa, VA had been dealing with an ongoing erosion problem for well over a year - all traced back to a failed drainage pipe off their rain gutter and french drain system that had been installed incorrectly. That pipe just kept dumping water directly onto the slope, month after month, until a massive section of it had completely washed away. By the time the owner caught it and fixed the pipe, the damage to the slope was already done. And we're not talking about a minor washout - we're talking a nearly 60% grade that had turned into a gaping void of red clay and collapsed earth dropping straight toward the water.

The owner had done their homework. Plans were drawn up. Permits were pulled. They just couldn't find a contractor willing - or capable - of actually doing the work. That's where we came in. We did our initial site visit and assessment, and right away we knew what it was going to take. Getting equipment and materials to this site was not straightforward. We had to secure access permission from an adjoining landowner, clear trees on that neighboring property to create a drop zone and carve out a stable working pad before we could even begin touching the washout itself. A 65-foot-long reach excavator was brought in specifically for this job - that kind of reach is what lets you work across a slope that steep without putting machines in a position they can't safely operate from.

Here's what the actual repair involved: we installed HDPE piping in place of the failed system, and we went beyond what the plans called for by adding concrete collars at every single pipe joint. That's just how we do things - if we're going to fix it, we're going to fix it right. Then came the fill. Over 750 tons of structural fill material was imported and compacted in lifts using a trench roller to make sure every layer stayed put. We placed 60 tons of #57 stone in the lowest washout area over underlayment fabric, per plans. The plans called for 2 check dams - we installed 4. 60 tons of #3 stone went into those. 80 tons of topsoil was brought in, and the entire slope was seeded and covered with EC-3 style erosion control fabric per plans.

The scale of what you're looking at from the air tells the whole story. That green erosion control blanket covering the regraded slope, the stone check dams visible through it - all of that came from months of planning, meetings and conversations with the property owners, the right equipment, and a crew that didn't blink at what most contractors walked away from. We also went back and fully stabilized the neighboring property we used for access. We don't leave a mess behind - not on the job site, and not on anyone else's property either.
