This one has been a long time coming. We cleared this lot about four months ago, and now we're back to finish what we started - grading the entire yard, bringing in fill and topsoil, and getting the ground ready for hydroseed.

A lot of people don't realize how much work goes into this stage. Clearing the trees is just the beginning. After that, you've got low spots to address, soil quality to think about, and grades to establish so water moves away from the house the way it's supposed to. Skip any of that and you'll have problems down the road - erosion, standing water, patchy grass that never takes hold.

Here's what we were working with after clearing: raw, uneven ground with a mix of native soil that needed some help. We brought in fill to build up the low areas, then topped it with fresh topsoil to give the hydroseed something to actually root into. Getting that base right is everything. Hydroseed is only as good as what's underneath it.

We've done a lot of new construction yard work around Gloucester, and the process is pretty consistent - clear, grade, amend, seed. But every lot is a little different. This one had some natural contour to it with the tree line running along the back, so we worked with that rather than fighting it. The finished grade follows the natural lay of the land while still draining properly around the home.

Hydroseed is up next, and once that goes down and germinates, this yard will go from raw dirt to a solid stand of grass. It's one of the more satisfying things we get to watch come together.
