Erosion Repair in Toano

Erosion behind a retaining wall is one of those problems that looks minor at first - then you realize how much yard you've actually lost. That's exactly what this customer in Stonehouse Glen was dealing with. Soil had washed away behind the retaining wall, leaving the grade well below where it should have been. Left alone, it only gets worse.

We brought in fill dirt to get things back to proper grade, then topped it with quality topsoil to give the seed a real chance to take hold. Over that, we installed VDOT EC-2 erosion control matting. That matting is the key piece here - it locks the seed and soil in place while grass establishes, so the next rain event doesn't undo everything you just put down. It's the right call for any slope or disturbed area that needs to hold.

The side yard had its own issue. Sheet flow - water that spreads out and moves across the surface in a wide, shallow sheet - was running unchecked along the fence line. To slow that down, we installed 5 tons of rip rap within the swale running along the side yard. The rock absorbs the energy of the water and keeps it from cutting into the soil or carrying material off the property.

Jobs like this one don't always make the highlight reel. No massive excavation, no dramatic before-and-after. But these are exactly the kinds of problems that cause real, compounding damage when they go unaddressed. Erosion doesn't stop on its own. Small jobs are still in our wheelhouse, and we treat them with the same attention we'd give any larger scope of work.
