This was a repeat client - and that alone says a lot. They reached out because the forebay on their BMP pond at Smith Farm Estates had silted in to the point where York County couldn't sign off on it. The forebay wasn't holding the volume it was originally designed for, and that's a compliance problem. It needed to be fixed the right way.

First thing we did was get the water out. We brought in a 6-inch diesel pump and cleared the standing water from the forebay area so we could actually get in and work. That step alone takes planning - you can't just drop a long-reach excavator into a saturated basin and start digging without setting yourself up for a mess.

Once the area was dewatered, we put a 65-foot long-reach excavator to work pulling sediment out and loading it into multiple dump trucks for removal off site. The long reach is what makes this kind of job possible - it lets us dig from the bank without the machine sinking into the soft bottom. After the bulk of the material was out, we brought in a mini excavator to fine-grade the tight spots the long reach couldn't get into cleanly. Two machines working together, each doing what it does best.

After grading was done, we didn't just walk away. The areas we used to access the site with the long reach got stabilized with EC-2 straw matting and seed. That's not optional on a job like this - bare disturbed ground next to a stormwater feature is exactly what county inspectors are looking at. We closed it out the right way.

The end result is a forebay that's back to its originally designed volume and meets York County's specifications. This is the kind of work that doesn't get a lot of attention until something goes wrong - but keeping your BMP infrastructure in compliance protects the community, the HOA, and the county's stormwater system as a whole. We're glad this client trusted us to handle it again.
