This backyard had been losing the battle with water for a long time. Sheet flow off the slope was carving channels through the soil, and where tree roots had started to decay underground, full-on sinkholes had opened up. Once the fill was in place and compacted, we ran silt fence around the disturbed area and laid EC-2 straw matting across the slope. The matting holds the soil in place while ground cover establishes - it's the right erosion control method for a slope like this, and it's what's required when you're doing work at this scale. Finish grade, topsoil, and the matting on top. That's how you leave a yard set up to actually hold.
